In this blog post, Michelene, the owner of PigMeUpholstery, offers her advice and suggestions to help you bond with your Guinea pigs.
She emphasizes the importance of creating a comfortable and stimulating environment for your Guinea pigs. Michelene suggests starting with a spacious and well-ventilated cage, filled with cozy bedding and plenty of hiding spots to make your guinea pigs feel secure.
Regular interaction is crucial for building trust. She advises to spend time each day talking to, and gently handling your guinea pigs. This not only helps them get used to your presence but also strengthens your bond. Patience is essential, as some guinea pigs may take longer to warm up to human interaction. By following her tips, you can create a loving environment for your guinea pigs to open up to you.
1) Enjoy quality time together.
While this may seem simple, it can be easy to overlook amid the busyness of everyday life. Domesticated guinea pigs often feel fearful of humans, so developing their trust requires time and patience. The more frequently you handle them for feeding and cuddling, the more comfortable and confident they will become around you.
2) Communicate clearly.
Maintain consistency in your vocal cues. Guinea pigs respond more to sounds than to visual signals. They can recognize specific noises, such as door squeaks, stair creaks, or the refrigerator closing. That being said, you can help effectively give them cues to help them understand you. You can make kiss sounds, click sounds, or even say common words or phrases such as “treat” or “dinner” and as long as you consistently use the same cues, they will remember them. They will usually respond with a “wheek” to let you know they understand! Given their strong food motivation, it’s likely they will want treats every time you greet them. It’s important to not let them down when you give them a vocal cue of food. It’s good to practice different cues to say hello, versus cues to signal it’s time for food. When you and your Guinea pigs are on the same page, there is a better understanding between you.
3) Snack Time and Spoiling
Establishing a consistent feeding schedule for your guinea pigs each day helps create a routine, allowing them to trust you. Incorporating healthy treats into their training and bonding process is beneficial, and these don't need to be costly store-bought options. Fresh fruits and vegetables can serve as excellent rewards. A great way to establish a bond with your guinea pigs is to hand-feed them their treats. If they seem hesitant, you can put the treats away and try again later. It's best to introduce this hand-feeding method after they have settled into their enclosure for more than a couple of weeks. Over time, this approach will help your piggies feel comfortable with approaching you. If you have any doubts about the types, quality, or amount of food your pets should consume, consult your veterinarian.
4) Recognize Their Body Language.
Guinea pigs communicate in unique ways. By learning to understand their body language and sounds, you can better address how to approach them. Observe your pet's movements, as these can indicate whether they feel scared or not. Much like rabbits, guinea pigs may enter a trance-like state when frightened. Pay attention to the sounds they make, and avoid trying to comfort them if they seem uneasy. A guinea pig will develop more trust in you if you respect their want for space. Occasionally, they might produce a low rumble while they run and hide. In such situations, instead of chasing after them, sit beside their enclosure and talk softly. You can offer a treat using your vocal cue for food, but if they remain hidden, it means they still don't feel comfortable. They may never feel completely comfortable leaving their safe space, but encouragement doesn’t hurt. Anytime you remove your guinea pigs from their enclosure it’s best to always have food ready for a reward. Even if they are too frightened to eat in your lap, when you put your guinea pig back in their cage it’s recommended to leave the treat for them to eat when they are ready.
5) Offer Enrichment.
Engaging your guinea pigs' senses keeps them entertained and content, which helps minimize boredom and improves their overall well-being. Provide toys that stimulate their minds and activities that excite them, such as Timothy cubes, puzzle feeders, or snuffle mats. Introduce new scents into their surroundings by incorporating natural, safe forage mixes into their hay or food. This not only adds excitement but also promotes their instinctual foraging behaviors. Additionally, playing soothing music or leaving the radio on can help your pets become accustomed to different voices. When guinea pigs feel confident, they are less fearful, and enrichment encourages them to be more curious.
Conclusion
Building a strong bond with Guinea pigs takes a lot of patience, and time. By adhering to a consistent routine, being gentle, and not overwhelming your pets beyond their comfort levels, you can create a solid bond with them. The key is to be attentive, ensuring your pet feels loved, secure, and appreciated.
